At the end of of every year, I look forward to the best of 2018 on my Instagram feed. And every year, I am intrigued to see what images were the most popular. Every year, my family ends up in the top nine, even though it is my business account and I share very few images of them.
My son Patrick on his birthday claimed the spot for most popular. This image also received a lot of notoriety for placing in the top 100 of the 2018 Shoot and Share contest for the category Share Joy. My deployed husband’s homecoming photo from midtour/Veteran’sDay post made it second. A collab I did with Stitches by Natalie from the Let’s Collab Official group rang in as third. (Read the blog. These were AMAZING gifts.) Another collab I did with Cate and Cruz for my daughter pulled the number eight spot!
From client photos, I was happy to see a variety and that my more emotive, unposed images ranked as more popular with those who looked at my Instagram feed. Surprisingly, three first birthday shoots made the top nine (four if you include my son’s). But they were VERY different first birthday sessions (a mommy and me, a cake smash, and a more traditional birthday/family session).
I have loved, loved, loved my sunrise sessions at the monuments, so I was so glad to see one of those ranking in at number seven. (Side note: for my military families, these are an amazing way to document your time in DC. There’s a fee, but just think of it as a donation to the National Parks Department, and you’ll feel better. These images are magical, and sunrise is great because the monuments are often pretty empty. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE some of these sessions this summer!)
A good inspiration for me with my photography, especially with my couples, has been to get them to play. Last September, my husband got a bonus week back in the United States during his deployment; I went to Texas for the weekend, and we had a session just the two of us with I realized after having a session in Texas with Chrissi M Photography. It was so much more relaxing than when we get images during a family session because the kids weren’t there! If I can say anything to the many moms and dads I photography, do a session with just you and your spouse at some point. It was so much fun to make it part of our date night!
Secondly, now is a GREAT time to book your spring and summer sessions. I’m traveling a bit, and I already have dates on my calendar for sessions. Sunrise photo sessions at the monuments are great in the summer. I can do Fresh 48 June through mid-August. I’ll have some mini session dates on my calendar, too!
