NOVA Family Photographer | H Family

This spring was supposed to be really busy with photography— documenting families and second shooting with Laura’s Focus Photography, but so much of it has been canceled or postponed. I always love shooting in NOVA (aka Northern Virginia for any non-locals who may be reading this.) My clientele goes in waves… sometimes I’m shooting a lot in Alexandria… other times I get a lot of sessions in Annapolis or Downtown DC. This spring was going to be really heavy with a lot of Virginia shoots.

This family was the last session I shot before the world turned upside down. We spent an hour doing one of my favorite things: walking around Old Town Alexandria. I always like starting at the Carlyle House; it is one of my favorite NOVA venues. What I love about this venue is that it’s pretty contained, which is great for my new walkers and toddlers that I photograph. They feel like they have freedom to roam, but they can’t get into too much trouble! If I am with a little one, I like to spend a chunk of time here before we wander Old Town.

An important tip for families in these sessions: pack light. I LOVE getting shots of you on the move, and if you’re bogged down with a stroller, diaper bag, and coffee, it’s really hard to get those in between movements as we move from spot to spot.

AND good news for my Virginia clients, it looks like the governor’s office has allowed outdoor socially distance shoots for groups under 10. So I’ll be trying to reschedule my spring shoots soon, and I am now offering Front Porch minis in Northern Virginia. (I have a waiting list for Maryland or D.C. clients.) I’ll be wearing a mask, using my zoom lenses, and staying far away. There’s a bit more coordinating with families before the sessions since I can’t “play” with kids like I usually do, but it’s better than not having a session at all!

The Front Porch sessions will be 20-minute sessions; you will get your choice of 8 images for $125; the entire gallery will be $225. These are lower than my normal pricing, but I know finances are tight for many families, so I want to help you document this time. I will not be interacting as much and doing my normal play with the kids; these sessions will be much more structured than a normal TCJ Design session. Virginia clients, you can book these now. Maryland and Washington, DC clients, you have to wait. They will not be happening until I can legally offer them! E-mail me at teresa@tcjdesign.com or through my contact page to get notified on when they are happening, though, and Virgnia folks, look for a blog post soon with a sample session!

Meet Teresa

WEDDING & PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY FOR PEOPLE WHO want their story told

Hi. I’m Teresa. While photography is a part-time job for me, documenting your stories doesn’t ever get treated like it’s not important. My full-time gig is teaching high school English, journalism, and photography at an all-boys’ school in Washington, DC. Journalism is my favorite subject to teach because it is as much about writing as it is about the art of observing the world, and I became a photographer because of my experiences in photojournalism.

You’ll see in galleries with my families, children, newborns, or weddings, my style definitely is more about documenting connection and trying to create real moments. I love a good portrait, but my heart is happiest when I get real smiles from people loving on and playing with each other.
