Documenting milestones and seeing families at different stages of their life is easily an amazing part of my job. Hands down, true family sessions are my absolute favorite. However, I’m also a sucker for milestones and cake smashes.
I was learning how to use a digital camera as my kids hit those monthly milestones, and it doesn’t take long to see how quickly my craft improved if you look at those monthly photos of my oldest versus my youngest. Babies change so quickly, and first birthday parties are as much about the baby surviving as it is about celebrating the baby’s mom and dad who survived a year of sleep deprivation and the many milestones that come with parenting.
I was so honored when months out Paisley’s mom asked me to come to her birthday party and document the day. I’ve done a number of birthday parties in the last year, many of them first birthdays, and it is always fun to see how the cake smash will play out.
I was lucky. My kids were all into their bright Sesame Street cupcakes and looked like someone painted them in Sesame Street colors by the end of their first birthdays. Each of them had a bath that changed the water color. My last one was all blue!
I’ve had three girls in the past year, and none of them were crazy excited about that cake, despite their parents trying to urge them to dive in. Paisley definitely played with it, and she enjoyed feeding it to mom and dad, but putting it in her mouth…no way! She at least enjoyed touching it and playing with it!
