Military Promotion Photographer | Promotion to Captain at the Navy Yard

As a military spouse, I love getting to do military promotions. They are such a special time commemorating the hard work of not just the military member, but his or her family, as well. I remember looking for a military promotion photographer who could easily get onto to base for my husband’s promotion on Andrews and who had a documentary style, and that’s my goal when I get chose to document a promotion.

Because this promotion was mid-January, they had to roll with the punches and be flexible; after the attack on the U.S. Capitol, they had to move their promotion, which was supposed to be on the National Mall at the WWII Memorial, as the entire National Mall was closed. Luckily, I have base access, so I had no issues getting on the Navy Yard; it was surprisingly my first time on the Navy Yard, and I was struck with how beautiful this little military installation is. As I learned from my husband, this used to be the headquarters for the Navy, explaining the ornate gems throughout the tiny military installation. I tried to make sure I documented some of the beauty of the artwork and history, as well.

Even in the midst of the pandemic, a number of relatives and friends were able to attend, and like almost every event I have attended this year, friends and family who could not attend watched virtually. Despite the chaos that was going in Washington, D.C. and with the pandemic itself, this ceremony was so special, celebrating the immense achievements of the new Navy Captain!

If you have a military family member retiring, getting promotion, or coming home from a deployment, please let me know. As a military spouse, I love getting to document these events, and I’m very comfortable and know the military protocol and how special these events are for those on the receiving end. I would love to be your military promotion photographer, and I do offer special discounts on these events! E-mail me at teresa@tcjdesign.com if you are interested in booking, and I can learn more about your event and let you know if I am able to be your military promotion photographer.

Happy Father's Day to all of the dads out there, especially those who are celebrating for the first time! Head over to @tcj_photos to see some of my awesome husband!
PSA from a military spouse: Memorial Day isn't about the veterans currently serving, who have served, or who have died of natural causes. That's why we have days like Veterans' Day or Armed Forces Day. Memorial Day is for those who lost their lives while serving. Last year, we visited the part of Arlington to see my husband's friend who died in a helicopter crash. It was heart-wrenching to see so many people hanging out, having a picnic, and just being as close as they could to their loved ones that left us too soon. I'm so thankful that my husband came back from those deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan and that he's been able to text me at the end of every helicopter flight to say he landed safely. Remember the real meaning of the day as you enjoy extra time off with your family and friends. It's not about honoring all Veterans. It's about honoring those who gave up everything for us.
I'm glad M let me do something a bit unconventional for part of her headshots session last week. I just couldn't resist the glowy light and being off-centered allows room for all sorts of text on a website. :)
I'm just loving editing this multi-generational shoot. The mom requested details, and I was happy to oblige. Great grandmother's and grandmother's hands that carried and cared for now adult babies now holding fresh tiny ones. I just loved it all. It's not my usual style, but I found myself loving it!

Big week for this kiddo. He makes his First Communion Saturday! I can’t wait to celebrate him. He has such an amazing suit!
Great grandma came to visit the baby, so it was the perfect time for photos of four generations. This is a little more formal than my normal work, but I have a lot of great candids, too. I just love little Cam's smile! Swipe to see one of him solo. He's almost five. months old!
We had such a busy day yesterday running all over. Today, we're catching up on some spring maintenance at home. Who else is loving this warmer weather?

More of this family session in my stories!
