Southern Maryland Beach Family Session

This family did a great job figuring out a casual style that matched the vibe of their location for their Southern Maryland beach family session. It helps that the mom was a branding photographer! They followed the mantra: coordinate, don’t match, and their vibe matches the location and no one was more dressed up than the rest!

Patterns CAN work, and this Southern Maryland beach family session shows perfectly how to do that. They have to be subtle. If they’re bold, only one person can be in the pattern. If you are in a casual location, then guess what: you want to have a more casual vibe. When clients are in a location like the National Mall, they can get fancy or keep it causal. I’ve had clients pull off both with great success!

One great thing about beach sessions is you don’t have to really worry about shoes. Everyone generally is shoeless! This isn’t the case for most sessions, so making sure your kids have comfortable shoes that fit is key to a successful session. Making sure that your kids also are dressed for the weather is important, too! If you have a winter session and young kids, I did save a few of my kids nicer coats to loan to clients if needed, so if you’d ever need that, then ask.

What is great about summer and this Southern Maryland beach family session is that coats also weren’t necessary. They dressed perfectly for the weather of the day, and everyone came in comfortable and ready to move. You can tell from this session I do a mix of posed and movement based sessions, so I don’t like my clients to carry a lot on them. Bring the most minimal amount of things you can. I’ll usually have a bit of room in my bag, but it’s not a lot, so pack light.
